¡Hola!
Bienvenidx, me llamo Davíd Mejía-Canales.
I’m among the luckiest people on earth, born and raised in Cuzcatlan and now I get to rest my head, an the rest of me, on sunny Gadigal Country.
This site is named after fellow countryman Salvador Efrain Salazar Arrue (pen name, Salarrue) a celebrated, poet, writer and thinker.
As a child I was drawn to his work because he wrote in the indigenous, slang-filled, Salvadoran Spanish that everyone around me spoke. His writing is so Salvadoran that it’s impenetrable to others. Also, After Salazar just sounds nice.
The Blog: Entre Nosotros
All these things happened among us… (Todo esto paso entre nosotros…) is the first line of the final report of the Truth Commission for El Salvador: From Madness to Hope.
The Commission was tasked with investigating the unmitigated horrors of the 12 year Salvadoran Civil War. I was born in the middle of that war, I remember it well, it’s stayed in my bones, skin and hair. It changed my life in deep, profound and complicated ways.
This whole project is probably just a way to untangle that complication, maybe?
When I write a book it will be called All These Things Happened Among Us/ Todo Esto Paso Entre Nosotros. The book is still being written but for now you get this here web log.
This blog is an outlet, a (vanity) project, a hobby. I can’t vouch for any of it, but maybe you might.
It doesn’t really have a format, there might be short stories, long stories, or a series of photographs, travel writing, whatever takes my fancy, really. It’s also a work in progress, I’ll add to it as I go.
Check back often, there may be something new to see.
Thanks for being here, I appreciate it.
